Who was George Gund?
George Gund, who served for many years as president and chairman of the Cleveland Trust Company, had wide-ranging philanthropic interests. He established the Foundation in 1952, and its assets increased significantly upon his death in 1966. To learn more about George Gund, click here.

How large is the Foundation?
The Foundation had assets of approximately $422 million at the end of 2009. The Foundation made 201 grants in 2009 totaling $15,378,729.

Who serves on the Foundation board?
The board includes eight Gund family members and two members from the Cleveland community. Click here for a list of board members.

What are the Foundation's funding priorities?

The Foundation also funds research on inherited retinal degenerative diseases through an annual grant to the Foundation Fighting Blindness and supports efforts to strengthen the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors.

Does the Foundation support organizations outside
Northeast Ohio?
 

The Foundation focuses most of its resources on organizations and projects based in Greater Cleveland. However, the Foundation does support state and national policy efforts that address program area priorities. Click here for more detailed information on each program area.

Does the Foundation make grants to individuals?
No, grants are made only to 501c3 organizations and to qualified government units and agencies.

Does the Foundation accept grants electronically?
No, we currently do not accept grants electronically or via fax but hope to begin accepting applications electronically in late 2010 or early 2011. 

Does the Foundation fund conferences, publications and media projects?
Grants for conferences, publications and media projects are considered only if they are directly related to priorities in the Foundation's five program areas.

Does the Foundation fund benefit events?
We do not buy tables or tickets for benefits.
